Taking a Pulse on 10 Years in Cardiac Genetics
Blueprint Genetics turned 10 years old this year! To celebrate, we are going back to our roots by highlighting 10 years of advances in the field of cardiovascular genetics.
This area of clinical genetics and cardiology has evolved significantly over the past decade. While some aspects of the diagnosis, management, and treatment of these patients have remained the same, important advances have transformed as well as challenged our approach to patients affected by inherited cardiovascular disease. Despite all the lessons learned so far, there is still much work to be done to improve our approach to caring for these patients and their families.
During this educational webinar, Shubhayan Sanatani, MD, FRCPC, and Melanie Care, MSc, CCGC, will provide a historical overview of 10 years in inherited cardiovascular disease practice with an emphasis on the evolution of clinical management and genetic testing.
Webinar Objectives:
- Describe how the diagnosis, management, and treatment of inherited cardiovascular disease has evolved over the last 10 years
- Summarize the major milestones achieved in cardiac gene curation to date
- Examine what future research and scientific breakthroughs are needed to improve how patients and families with inherited cardiovascular disorders are cared for

He is the pediatric lead of the British Columbia Inherited Arrhythmia Program, and serves on both the Canadian and American Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome Foundations medical advisory committees. A collaborative approach to clinical and translational research have supported 200 publications. He is a founding member of the Canadian Heart Rhythm Society and served as the VP of Research for the Pediatric and Congenital Electrophysiology Society (PACES) prior to becoming President in 2016.
Melanie Care
Melanie Care, MSc, CCGC completed her Masters in Genetic Counseling at the University of Toronto. She spent her early career in the Genetics Program at North York General Hospital in Toronto, ON and in 2007 joined the team at the Fred A. Litwin Family Centre in Genetic Medicine, a combined adult clinical genetics program of the University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital. For the past six years she has been working in two half-time positions at Toronto General Hospital. She has clinical and research roles, embedded in the cardiology department as a member of the Inherited Arrhythmia Clinic and a laboratory position in the Genome Diagnostics Laboratory with a focus on inherited cancer syndromes. Melanie is actively involved in teaching and clinical supervision in the Genetic Counseling program at the University of Toronto. She is also a past member of the ClinGen cardiovascular working group and currently a member of an international channelopathy research consortium.
